Good hydration keeps a roses petals soft and healthy. Do the same for your insides! Photo by oystergirl!

Sometimes life gets extremely busy, and that time is right now for me! With the end of school coming up and the garden needing attention and Girl Scouts wrapping up and college search ramping up, it is hard to always find time to take care of myself!

When life gets like this, I am always confident in the fact that I am doing my best for my family with the foods we eat, but I also have two little secret weapons to keep me firing on all cylinders! I do not take vitamin supplements as a general rule, but use food as nutritional support. Eating a balanced healthy diet with plenty of saturated fat, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy protiens is key, as well as fermented vegetables and dairy for the regular upkeep of the body, but when things get tough, I like to support a few organ systems so I can stay on top of the stress.
When you get stressed, one of the most important things for health is remaining well hydrated. Water is the key of life, and behind the air we breathe it is the most important thing in life. Removal of water from the body will kill you faster than removing food. It is essential to almost every body function and it is the basis of metabolism and cell chemistry. Drinking between 8-10 glasses of good filtered tap water a day is a great base for healthy body function. As the temperatures start to climb, being well hydrated is paramount to good health.

I also find it relieves stress to support the kidneys, liver and bladder. Extra care can help prevent constipation and bladder infection if dehydration becomes an issue. The following two simple recipes are my secret weapons to keeping my body balanced and happy when I might forget to brush my teeth! These are my go to body healthy pauses every single day and help me keep in fighting form!

Lemon Water

16 oz Filtered water
Juice of one organic Lemon or 1 tbs organic lemon juice

Swirl and drink down.  Lemon supports the kidneys, flushes the liver and thins mucous in the body, including nasal sinus areas and the bowel. This drink helps with the digestive juices as well and is a great morning beverage before anything else to get the body started. If you have problems with moving your bowels, drink it warm and you should have great results in about 1/2 hour.

Cranberry, Cherry, Berry Splash

1 32 oz. Bottle Trader Joe’s or similar Unsweetened Cranbery Juice
1 32 oz. Bottle Trader Joe’s Cherry Juice
1 32 oz. Bottle Trader Joe’s Berry mix or  Pomegranate or 100% Concord Grape Juice.

In a large glass covered container, mix all the  juices together and store in the refrigerator.

2 oz mixed juice blend
14 oz.filtered water

Stir and drink. Use this mixture once a day to support healthy bowels, bladder, kidney and liver. This drink is filled with antioxidants to remove free radicals. It also helps prevent gout, keeps the bowels regular (if you are constipated, drink 2-3 glasses a day as the cherry juice especially is very cleansing), and cranberry has been shown to help ward off bladder infections.  I find this a refreshing end to a workout because it really replaces lost trace minerals and electrolytes without all the sugar of sports drinks. Especially when dehydrated, this juice is helpful because dehydration is one of the top indicators for bladder infections, and if you are prone to cystitis, this should be your go to beverage in the morning and at night.  Some folks also blend in 2 tbs. ground organic flax seed to boost omega-3′s if necessary and aid in bowel health.

So, a little bit of fruit juice, mixed with a whole bunch of water, can really help keep you on track when the going gets rough, and let’s face it, it can get rough any time!
