I have a friend from college who years ago opened a tiny shop to sell indigenous clothing and crafts. Each winter he would pack up his growing family and travel to countries as close as Mexico and as far as Thailand in search of artisans who created amazing traditional products. We always loved to hear the stories of his travels and adored the idea that he was supporting local folks in the continuation of their authentic crafts. But he is only one man, with one store and while the artisans he worked with were lucky to come in contact with him and develop working relationships, he didn’t have the scope to meet with thousands of craftspeople.
